What is the name of a newborn bee? ›

In a honey bee colony, baby bees are called brood. Brood (or larvae) most often refers to small white grubs. These larvae are in the growing stage of development.

Baby bees do not have stingers. This is because when a bee egg hatches it produces a worm like organism called the larva. Larvae are fairly defenseless because they are not very motile and they do not have stinging structures. They are thus dependent on other members of the bee colony for defense and upkeep.

Larva: After 3 days, an egg will hatch into a larva. Worker bees will feed and tend to the larvae as they grow.

Most bee-lookalikes are hoverflies. These harmless flies cannot sting. Some hoverflies resemble solitary bees or honeybees such as Drone flies.

But, actually baby bumble bees look more like white worms. They start their lives as worm-like larvae, then, like 🐛->🦋go through complete metamorphosis. What you have here is a newly emerged and winged-adult 🐝.

In contrast, some insects transform from one body type to another as they grow. This transformation, or metamorphosis, is an amazing feat. Bees undergo a complete metamorphosis, as they progress through four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Young bees will typically be covered in fuzzy fur, and as they age, the hair will be removed, leaving behind a shinier body.

Worker bees that lay eggs are called laying workers. Their eggs, usually placed in worker cells, develop into undersized but functional drones. Worker-bee larvae hatch from the eggs in 3 days, are fed royal jelly for 2 1/2 days, and then their diet is changed to include pollen and honey for 2 1/2 days.

Young bees, above the age of 20 days, fly above their home location before taking 180 degrees turn facing their hives to orientate to their landscape.

The majority of honey bee larvae eat honey, but larvae that are chosen to become future queens will be fed with royal jelly. Royal jelly is a white secretion produced by young, female worker bees. It is comprised of pollen and chemicals from the glands of worker bees.

Lastly, when a honey bee queen suddenly dies, an urgent and unplanned supersedure occurs. Worker honey bees identify several larvae within the proper age range and begin to condition these larvae to become queens.
