Avoiding some activities on Particular days – Myths & Science in them!

A Girl devotee (Name hidden on request) asked like this:

“Hare krishna prabhuji. I have query regarding Doubts about superstitions. Someone says, dont wash cloths on thursday or don’t wear black on saturday. Dont wash your hair on Wednesday if you have a brother, don’t cut nails on tuesday etc… so what is the logic behind this.. should we follow these superstitions, As Our elders have followed them, since before. And also I must thank you for the knowledge you are providing as someone can’t stop reading only one page of your post (main page of website) as the links, given in that page encourage to read further posts and so on. REPLY:

In some cases of avoiding some activities on Particular days, there will be a logic or science. In some other cases, there will be no logic or science.

I always see the logic and science behind every advice of elders. If I find any logic and science in it, I explain them to the readers of our site and advice them to try to follow. If I do not find any logic, I treat them as superstitious and I do not encourage them.

I myself will write a few separate posts about some myths, logical advice, facts, etc. to make the devotees clear about such things! Treat this as the first post about the myths & science in avoiding some activities on Particular days. The devotees may write what they feel myths. I will try to find the logic in them and advice accordingly.

Now, your question.

(1) Don’t wash clothes on Thursdays

Thursday is meant for Jupiter. Jupiter is the planet of fortune. He is able to clear all the doshas and negativities just with his sight. They believe that our fortunes will go away if we wash the clothes on Thursdays. In those days, the people were wearing saffron coloured clothes. Saffron colour is meant for Jupiter. If we wear saffron, it protects us from negative rays and vibrations.

Since Thursday is meant for Jupiter, we are advised to avoid washing clothes on Thursdays that may wipe our good fortunes away.

MY ADVICE:

The reason given is not so serious. However, if you have weak Jupiter in your horoscope, you may avoid washing clothes on Thursdays.

(2) Don’t wear black on Saturday

Black is the colour of Saturn (Shani). It will absorb all the negative vibrations of shani. And, black colour absorbs the rays passed by the planets instantly.

That is why, wearing black clothes during hot days will make our body hot.

Since there will be more effects of saturn’s rays on us, Saturn’s rays will be allowed to fall on us.

In general, the people believe that Saturn gives problems. Though it is not fully true for all, there is such a belief. When we wear black clothes, it absorbs the rays of Saturn. So, the rays of Saturn fall on us excessively.

Since the people fear for the effects of Shani, this advice of avoiding black dress on Saturdays.

MY ADVICE:

I welcome problems. Shani is helping us to clear our karma by giving problems. So, for the persons of my type, this advice will not match. For others who do not like to see the problems, avoid black clothes on Saturdays. Some scientific logic is there as I explained.

(3) Don’t wash your hair on Wednesdays

Ha Ha. Mercury will be very active on Wednesdays. Mercury is the controller of our intelligence. Mercury’s rays will pass through our head to the brain to make us intelligent.

When we wash hairs on Wednesdays, the rays passing on our head will also be washed away.

So, we may become fools. Hence this advice of No hair wash on Wednesdays.

MY ADVICE:

Rays will be falling on our head throughout the day. So, it will not completely go away if we wash our hairs for five minutes. So, not serious advice. However, if you wish, avoid washing hairs on Wednesdays.

(4) If you have a brother, don’t cut nails on Tuesday

It is believed that if we cut the nails on Tuesdays, it will affect our younger brother.

There is a fact that Mars is the controller of younger brother and Blood. Mars is very active on Tuesdays. So, if we cut the nails on Tuesdays and if we lose some blood while cutting the nails, there is a belief that our younger brother may be affected.

MY ADVICE:

Not to be seriously followed if you use nail cutters. In those days, the people used knifes to cut the nails and hence shed blood some times. Because, now a days, there are nail cutters that cut our nails without bloodshed.
