Impulse Buying and/or Compulsive Shopping: Frequent Consequences of ADHD

A new leather jacket, a modern flatscreen TV, a fancy car – spontaneous, ill-advised purchases are not uncommon with ADHD. Quite the contrary, we know today that a true shopping addiction can be a possible consequence of ADHD. This sometimes has a significant impact, not only on your financial situation, but also on your family and relationships.

If you have a tendency to make impulse purchases, you may be able to stop doing so with a few simple measures. You'll find out how this works in this slide show.

Important: If you feel you may be a shopaholic, psychotherapy can also be an option to seek help.

Analysing Your Financial Situation

As a first step, it is important to set a limit for financial spending per week.

A financial check will help you to determine a realistic amount.

Take the following into consideration:

  • Fixed costs per month (such as rent, fuel, food)
  • Reserves for emergencies (such as a car repair)
  • Reserves for special outgoings (such as a holiday, planned celebrations etc.)

Based on this calculation, you can find out how much disposable income you have left for the week. Often this alone is a "sobering" experience.

Recalculate Realistically

Let's say your financial limit for free spending is 100 Euro, but nobody wants to be at one's limit all the time. In this case, you need to deduct a bit more. That way you can be sure that you won't have to go overdrawn or borrow money.

Suggestion: 25 Euro for free spending – without a bad conscience!

Involve Your Partner

In a relationship, the finances always concern both parties! Once you have worked out your strategy, you should discuss this with your partner. If there are expenses that are above the calculated limit, a conversation with your partner is an absolute must.

Agree on this collectively.
