There are so many interesting things to learn about within the Universe that astronomers often become specialists who focus on galaxies, stars, planets, star-forming regions, the Sun, the search for life, or the origin and evolution of the Universe as a whole.

Undoubtedly among the most famous astronomers of all time, Galileo constructed a simple refracting telescope in 1610 and became the first person to use a spy-glass for astronomy. The sheer number of stars, the rough surface of the Moon and sunspots astonished him.

Well, astronomers study the planets, stars, galaxies and solar systems to learn more about the universe. The work of an astronomer uses principles of physics and mathematics to explain celestial occurrences. Most astronomers' jobs have a heavy focus on research and are based at universities.

Astronomy is a relatively small field internationally, so having flexibility in your location and type of institution you're willing to work at can help you secure a permanent post.

Dark energy and our cosmic future

At some schools, students can pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in astronomy, while at others, astronomy is a combined major with physics or astrophysics. Regardless of their specific degree or track, astronomy majors study mathematics, science – especially physics – and the mysteries of space.
