The top seven aromatherapy oils to make a difference in supporting your well being

After a break of about 100 years aromatherapy oils are back in action and their position in preventing ailments is getting stronger with more and more evidence coming to explain why these aromatic essences are so potent. This is quite a natural development that we connect to the nature and seek help in nature’s own medicine.

It is known for centuries that the best way to treat any ailment is to prevent.

Aromatherapy oils are doing just that. And having at the top 7 aromatherapy oils at home gives us plenty of options to keep our own well-being in control.

When an aromatherapy (essential) oil interacts with a human being, the thalamus separates the event into three different impulses: one reaches the motoric physical centre (material plane), one to the cortex (mental plane), and one to the hypothalamus (vital emotional plane).

Instinct, biological programmes, physical body, thought, and memory are all involved. ‘Holistic’ means, that not just a symptom or a disease should be recognised but the whole person.

Aromatherapy families

Essential oils are divided into groups or families according to their components and action. We composed a list of the top seven aromatherapy oils by taking one of every of the described families above.

1. Lavender the number one essential oil

Monoterpenols have strong antimicrobial effect. They also have most appealing fragrance, have great value for maintaining balance and preventing disease. Aromatherapy oils of this group are powerful anti-viral agents with broad antifungal and antibacterial properties. They are useful for respiratory conditions and inflamed skin. The brightest example of monoterpenols is lavender essential oil. Try clary sage as a substitute.

2. Sweet orange

Monoterpenes are aromatherapy oils from citrus peels and needle trees. They show pronounced anti-viral activity. Needle oils have decongestant effect in respiratory tract. Citrus peel oils have antispasmodic effect for digestive and respiratory systems. They also calm the activity of the nervous system and can help in treating insomnia.

I would also recommend mandarin essential oil as a substitute of sweet orange essential oil.

3. Roman chamomile

Esters have a distinct relaxing effect on the nervous system. They relax, balance, loosen tension, and are spasmolytic. They show anti-infectious and anti-fungal properties. Besides Roman chamomile, esters include aromatherapy oil of bergamot.

4. Peppermint

Ketones display expectorant, analgesic, and antispasmodic effects. Apart from peppermint essential oil they include rosemary essential oil.

5. Eucalyptus

Aldehydes have strong anti-viral effects and anti-inflammatory activities. Similar properties are found in ravintsara essential oil.

6. Tea tree

Oxides show anti-viral and expectorant properties. Tea tree essential oil is practically heal-all remedy. You can also try manuka essential oil which has a sweet floral herbaceous aroma and similar properties.

7. Frankincense

Sesquiterpenols have revitalising and regenerating powers. Another essential oil with the same properties would be sandalwood.

The oils should be exclusively genuine and authentic to be effective. You can find them together with the description of their properties here.
