Still trying to figure out exactly what you can claim on your taxes? The good news is you can claim dental expenses. Many dental expenses are considered a medical expense, and are therefore deductible. However, it’s not as straightforward as it may seem--there are a few things you’ll need to know. According to TurboTax, the IRS will allow you to deduct any qualified expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income.
What’s Deductible?
Expenses that are typically covered are ones that are preventative or necessary treatments or surgeries. Prescriptions and dentures, for example, can be deducted, as could a filling or root canal. You can also claim whatever it cost you to get to and from the dentist, such as a bus ticket, car mileage, or parking fees.
And What’s Not?
You cannot claim anything that you have been or will be reimbursed for, nor can you claim anything purchased with your flexible spending account. Cosmetic procedures are also not deductible, and you can’t claim general health purchases like toothpaste or a gym membership.
Keep Your Receipts
Remember, if you want to deduct medical or dental expenses, you’ll need to provide your receipts as proof of the procedure or purchase. If you don’t have a receipt from a dental service, your dentist should be able to provide you with a receipt. Do yourself a favor--don’t wait until April to ask!
