Pattern making is the process of creating a paper template or "pattern" for a garment. This pattern is then used to cut fabric and sew the garment together. Pattern making is a crucial step in the fashion design process, as it allows designers to translate their ideas into a physical form that can be produced and worn.

To get started with pattern making, you will need a few basic tools and supplies:

Drafting paper: This is paper that is printed with grid lines and is used for creating patterns. You can purchase drafting paper or make your own by drawing grid lines on regular paper.

Pencils: Use pencils to sketch out your pattern ideas and make any necessary revisions.

Tracing wheel: This is a small wheel with a sharp point that is used to trace patterns onto drafting paper.

French curve: This is a curved ruler that is used to draw smooth, curved lines. It is especially useful for creating curved necklines, armholes, and hemlines.

Straight scale: A ruler or other straight edge can be used to draw straight lines and create precise measurements.

Fabric scissors: These are specially designed scissors that are sharp enough to cut through fabric without fraying the edges.

To create a basic pattern, start by sketching out your design on paper. Then, use a tracing wheel and drafting paper to transfer the sketch onto the drafting paper. From there, you can start adding in precise measurements and refining the pattern. You may need to make multiple prototypes or "muslins" to get the fit and shape just right.

Once you have a finished pattern, you can use it to cut fabric and sew the garment together. With practice, you can develop your skills and create more complex patterns for a wide range of garments.

Another very useful set of information. Those new versions of my older tools look very nice. I also Have two Grading Squares. I would not personally use the thin drafting paper (Dot & Cross) as it is difficult to work with for everyone. After retiring, I volunteered to cover someone in a London Design Studio who was going on holiday. I arrived for a pre meeting and was asked to do a test making a DB Jacket Pattern. I could not understand why my squares kept tearing the paper. On investigation I found grains of sand on the table were the cause. I discovered that their sand filled Sellotape holder was leaking the sand. I have always used an appropriate grade of card for all of my patterns. Best Wishes, Frank
