GRAMATICAL-TEXTUAL CRITICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE LEVIRATE TEXT OF DEUTERONOMY IN AN AFRICAN CONTEXT

Quite some work has been done on the Levirate Text of Deuteronomy (Deut.25:5-10). However these have focused more on its ancient Near Eastern context with emphasis on its patriarchal outlook; to the neglect of its correlates in African cultures, and the significance of its peculiar grammar and important text-critical issues within the text. This study therefore employs the grammatical critical and textual critical methods to reexamine Deut.25:5-10, while contextual hermeneutics is engaged with a view to bring out in bold relief, the peculiar nuance of meaning implied in the peculiar usage of the phrase ָ‫ֶיה‬ ‫ל‬ ָ ‫ﬠ‬ ‫ֹא‬ ‫ָב‬ ‫י‬ in the Leningrad Codex instead of the standard grammatical form ‫ָב‬ ‫י‬ ֹ ָ‫ֶיה‬ ‫ל‬ ֵ‫א‬ ‫א‬ employed by the Samaritan Pentateuch, and how the two variant readings correlates with the practice of levirate marriage in indigenous Yoruba culture of South Western Nigeria. This paper argues that the peculiar phrase ָ‫ֶיה‬ ‫ל‬ ָ ‫ﬠ‬ ‫ֹא‬ ‫ָב‬ ‫י‬ in the Leningrad codex, read with the African cultural experience, was a deliberate literary device intended to draw attention to the fact that the intrinsic value of the practice of levirate marriage in ancient Israel is to provide social security for the widow, with the resultant effect of perpetuating the lineage of the deceased. INTRODUCTION The Levirate Text of Deuteronomy (Deut.25:5-10) is the only biblical text that gives detailed legislations with regards to the practice of levirate marriage in ancient Israel. Majority of work done so far on this periscope have focused more on its ancient Near Eastern context 1 with emphasis on its patriarchal outlook. This has led scholars to a consensus that the primary aim for the practice of levirate marriage was merely to perpetuate the deceased brother's name, and keep the property inherited within the bounds of the patrilineal lineage 2. Targeted toward the exegete, A CALL TO COVENANT LOVE offers a clear method for establishing flow of thought, text hierarchy, and literary macrostructure in biblical Hebrew prose. The study contributes both to hermeneutical theory and to the study of Deuteronomy by arguing for the application of discourse linguistics alongside stylistic and semantic analysis in the interpretation of OT texts. It is distinct from most other textlinguistic studies in its attention to reported direct speech and in its inclusion of a brief literary-structural and theological commentary on Deuteronomy 5–11 that models the text grammatical approach and shows its benefits for exegesis. The study's first goal is to clarify the formal elements of biblical Hebrew that operate above the sentence level and that help guide the understanding of text structure. Through rigorous analysis of the formal features, semantic meaning, and discourse function of every clause in Deuteronomy 5–11, this study lucidly evaluates and articulates how biblical Hebrew marks and/or tracks logic and flow of thought, foregrounding, participant reference, and various discourse signals. As the book s main title suggests, in this study discourse grammar is a servant to exegesis. Through numerous examples and commentary, the study demonstrates that the biblical text is both coherent in its discussion and cohesive in its organization. Furthermore, A CALL TO COVENANT LOVE clearly and passionately articulates the lasting message of one of the OT Scripture's most foundational sections, extending the original call to life-encompassing, Godward surrender into the present age.

A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE DEUTERONOMIC REFORM IN ISRAEL: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE IN NIGERIA In Biblical Studies and Social Transformation in Africa

This paper employs a narrative-critical reading of the narrative of the deuteronomic reform, (2Kings.22:1-23:32) against the backdrop of deuteronomistic history, to suggest that the failure of this reform to foster a lasting social change is inherent in a lope-sided perception of the covenant principle. The people focused on the legal and cultic aspects of the covenant to the neglect of the very essence of it, which is the moral imperative. Hence the attendant social reform was political and religious, but morally weak. This position is strengthened by prophetic appraisal of the reform, which the study highlights by employing redaction critical observations. The paradigm uncovered in the study is then applied to the Nigerian situation in which religious morality is fast giving way under the pressure of political, economic and legislative reform. This reveals impeding moral disaster, which may be averted by a renewed emphasis on moral instruction, and mass orientation of the citizenry through the religious institutions.
