What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is an annual two-day shopping event for Amazon Prime members. It is held in July and features deals on various products, from electronics to home goods to clothing. This year in 2024, Prime Day was held on July 16 and 17.

Amazon also hosts a two-day shopping event in October, called Prime Early Access sale in 2022 and Prime Big Deal Days in 2023.

Let’s take a look at some actual sales numbers from a few brands that ran deals on Amazon during Prime Day. The sales data indicated below is from the Jungle Scout Extension and Product Tracker and shows the significant impact running a deal has on your product during Prime Day on July 16-17, 2024.

To get a better understanding of the impact this sales event had on these products, we’ll show you what the Best Sellers Rank (BSR) was the day before Prime Day, as well as the average daily sales, and sales price — before and during the event.

1. Fitbit Charge 6 Fitness Tracker

The average price for this Fitbit is $151. During the event, the sales price was $99.95.

Here’s how much its BSR improved during Prime Day. Note: The lower the BSR, the better.

Now here’s a look at the Prime Day impact on units sold.

Fitbit offered a significant discount on its product on the second day of Prime Day, and it paid off. Not only did their sales skyrocket, but two days after the event, they’re still selling a significant amount of product, as the Prime Day sale shot them up in rank from 110 in Sports & Outdoors to number one in the entire category!

Sales will eventually return to normal, but the after-effect of Prime Day will last at least a few more days.

2. AeroGarden Harvest with Gourmet Herb Seed Pod

You may notice that the “sales price” is higher than the average price.

• Average price: $81.53
• Sales price: $119.99

This is an interesting case where the price was actually higher on Prime Day than just a few days before. Let’s see what the sales and BSR were, even with a higher price.

Even with a higher price point, this brand was still able to increase sales by over 4.5 times! Plus on the 18th, a day after prime day, they sold 663 units!

This proves that you don’t need to have a discount in order for your sales to skyrocket on Prime Day. It’s worth noting is that this brand has been around for a while and is very popular (4.6 rating out of 21,000+ reviews) so it makes sense why they would see an increase. But either way, it is crazy to see the kind of impact Prime Day has on all products, discounted or not.

3. TaylorMade TP5 Golf Balls

These Taylormade golf balls were on sale for a good discount during Prime Day and it clearly paid off because they were able to increase the sales by over 6x on the last day of Prime Day.

• Average price: $42.99
• Sales price: $33.99

While it’s clear you don’t always need a discount, it of course helps boost your sales during these big sales events and your loyal customers will be appreciative who frequently purchase your products (especially me after gifting these golf balls to the woods each weekend).

4. TaylorMade 2021 Tour Preferred Flex Glove

I know, another golf product, but it’s another great example of providing a modest discount for a big pay off.

• Average price: $19.84
• Sales price: $15.28

The average daily sales of this golf glove are around 100 units per day, but on the second day of Prime Day, the sales jumped to 671 units sold. And on the 18th, they still sold 648 units.

5. Sports Research Vitamin D3

Here’s an example of a brand that sells roughly 78 units per day, and they were able to boost their sales on Prime Day to 101 units sold on the last day.

• Average price: $13.95
• Sales price: $9.77

While not a huge increase, still a noticeable amount than their typical day on Amazon.

Prime Day is great for smaller brands like this to push the product out to more customers.

We all know how big Prime Day is, but have you ever seen the actual numbers from the event? Let’s review some statistics Amazon published from the 2024 Prime Day sale just to show you the significance of this event.

• Prime Day 2024 was a record breaking event for Amazon.
  
• Prime Day sales reached $14.2 billion in sales, 11% higher than last years $12.7 billion total.
  
• Prime Day 2024 was the biggest sales day for third-party sellers, whose sales outpaced Amazon’s retail business.
  
• Amazon offered more Prime Day deals for small businesses than ever before.

How to Keep Customers Engaged After Prime Day

One of the hardest things to do as an entrepreneur is to acquire repeat customers in your business. On Prime Day, your listing has a good chance of receiving more traffic and sales than it would on a normal day. So how do you retarget those customers or visitors?

With Amazon Sponsored Display Ads, you can retarget potential customers on and off of Amazon – meaning, your ads will appear on Amazon and on other websites where your customers visit.

Here’s what you can do with Sponsored Display Ads:

• Retarget customers who have previously viewed your listing(s) within the past 30 days
• Retarget customers who have purchased from you in the past
• Target similar products or categories
• Target customers based on their interests and previous shopping behaviors (vendors only)

By retargeting customers who have either viewed your listings and didn’t purchase, or previous customers, you may have an increased chance of converting them into a new or repeat buyer.

Prepare for the 2024 Prime Fall Deal Event

Now that Prime Day 2024 has passed, it is time to prepare for Prime Fall Deal Event, which will be similar to Prime Day. “A Prime-exclusive shopping event that will begin in Q4.”

While Amazon has not alerted sellers when they should send inventory for this event, they have stated to create deals for the Prime Fall Deal Event by August 6, 2024 (and September 6, 2024 for Black Friday/Cyber Monday.)

Preparing for this event will be no different than preparing for Prime Day or even the holidays. Make sure you have deals lined up, inventory ready, listing optimized, and marketing and advertising ready to go.
