Mysterious Shards are golden crystals held by mysterious figures in black robes called Tha’abeen, usually accompanied by one or two guards. The Mysterious Shards are part of Nehal's mission, The Calling.

Once collected, the Mysterious Shards can be used to unlock three secret chests that are found in the Hidden Place that contain an exclusive outfit and weapons.

This page of our Assassin's Creed Mirage Guide details how to find all Mysterious Shards, including custom maps with all Tha'abeen patrol routes and the best places to assassinate them.

  • Mysterious Shards are held by people in black robes known as Tha'abeen members and can be accompanied by 0-2 guards at any time. Each region in the game has two Mysterious Shards to collect.
  • Mysterious Shards can be spent at a secret underwater cave in the desert for exclusive and unique Gear. You'll need to collect all ten shards to unlock this Gear.
  • Tha'abeen will always go along an extensive but pre-determined route through a particular area of Baghdad, going past numerous opportunities to pickpocket or assassinate them. They will also always stop at pre-determined points to set up a few more of these.

  • Mysterious Shards can technically all be collected as soon as Basim returns to Baghdad in the "Baghdad Bound" Quest. However, if you complete the "My Old Home" quest (shortly after your first major assassination), they'll be marked on the map like any other collectible will be, and Basim will vocally notice them when he gets close.
  • Tha'abeen will randomly choose to go along their path clockwise or anti-clockwise, so keep this in mind when hunting for them or using our maps below.
  • The area around the Tha'abeen is considered a Restricted Area. Their guards instantly become incredibly suspicious of you if you run up to them or even pass them at a quick speed.
  • Be aware that Tha'abeen are technically classified as guards. This means that if you pickpocket somebody and the victim asks for help, they'll briefly abandon their patrol route to listen to the victim's pleas and then try to look for you. It also means that they'll respond to the call of Horn Bearers!

Killing Tha'abeen Tips

  • All ten Tha'abeen are found in urban areas, so don't bother scouting around the open plains and deserts.
  • To tail a Tha'abeen, your best option is to use Basim's Eagle Sense. This will highlight assassination methods in white, and Basim's walking speed will be slower, meaning you can keep pace with them without raising their suspicion.
  • If you have Enkidu's Eagle Sense skill, then you can tag the Tha'abeen themselves to see a short preview of their patrol route, giving you an idea of where they're going. However, remember that you need to tag the Tha'abeen first (a shield icon will appear above their heads when you do this); otherwise, the patrol line won't appear.
  • In the city, benches are your best friend. This is because when Basim assassinates someone from a bench, he'll naturally approach the target and then kill the target before sitting them down. This is an entirely covert kill that won't be noticed even by the Tha'abeen's own guards, and so is our recommendation for killing them.
  • On the opposite end of the spectrum, hay and the curtained hiding spots are awful assassination spots because Tha'abeen's guards and the public will immediately notice your action. We only suggest using these methods if you're rather impatient.
  • The Auto-Collect skill is incredibly useful when killing a Tha'abeen, as the skill automatically collects loot from an assassinated enemy. This includes Throwing Knives, so you can kill the Tha'abeen from a rooftop and not have to drop down and loot the body for the shard!
  • If you're extremely brave, it's possible to rush up to a Tha'abeen, Pickpocket them, and then flee before they and their guards cut you down.
  • Tha'abeens' are no more difficult than regular swordsmen. Thus, fighting them in public is feasible if it's a last resort option, but you'll have to deal with the consequences of drawing in other guards and a hit to your notoriety.
  • On the chance you get detected by the guards too early without getting them hostile, see if you can slip into a group of people for social stealth. Doing so will quickly defuse the situation.

Abbasiyah - Mysterious Shard 1

Abbasiyah - Mysterious Shard 1

  • Locations:
    • Abbasiyah - Haylanah / Suburb of Kahtabah
    • Karkh - Fief of Rayasanah

This Tha'abeen is protected by just a single guard, and the two travel around the southwestern area of the city. They are unique because they technically cover two regions: Abbasiyah and Karkh. Despite this, he's still counted for the Abbasiyah region.

  1. At the Northwestern point of their route, there'll be a bench close to a bridge over the river to the Hammam. As you may know, you can Whistle the Tha'abeen from here and assassinate them covertly since Basim will sit the body down so no one will notice the deed.
  2. A few tall bushes surround the path crossing in front of the Hammam. These will completely obscure an assassination if you can lead the Tha'abeen into one with a Whistle.
  3. You can use two benches for a whistle assassination on the bridge's North end connecting the Hammam to Kufa Gate.
  4. Just southeast of Kufa Gate, the pair will stop next to some large bushes. You can Pickpocket them using the bushes as cover, or if you're daring, try a whistle assassination from within the largest bushes.
  5. The pair will stop at the South end of the bridge northeast of the Tax Collector's Mansion. The only assassination you can do here is a well-placed Throwing Knife from the rooftops.
  6. Just East of the Tax Collector's Mansion, the Tha'abeen will pass by a bench under a large awning on the side of the street.
  7. Southwest of the Tax Collector's Mansion is a gate between the Karkh and Abbasiyah regions. The pair will stop here to look at a guard (among many). No assassination opportunities are here, so this is only for rooftop knife-throwing kills.
  8. Northwest of the Dome of the Ass, the Tha'abeen will stop to rest under a tree. A tall bush here will obscure a kill if you can lure her over with a Whistle.
  9. On the Western part of their patrol, the pair will pass by several benches on the sides of the street.
  10. The pair will divert to the river near the bridge at the North-Western-most point of their route. There are some tall bushes here that will obscure an assassination.

Abbasiyah - Mysterious Shard 2

Abbasiyah - Mysterious Shard 2

  • Location: Abbasiyah -Yasiriyah / Suburb of Kahtabah

This Tha'abeen member is another rare case where she's completely unguarded. This opens up the opportunity to pickpocket her or safely lure her into a curtained hiding spot. Her patrol path takes her around the Northern part of the Abbasiyah region.

  1. In the middle of the Four Markets, the Tha'abeen will sit down on a bench. While you can't sit down next to her (you'll raise the alarm just getting close anyway), you can hit a sack of red spice next to her. This will create some foggy cover that will obscure an assassination.
  2. Directly North of the Scriptorium, the Tha'abeen will pass by a bench. Lure her in with a whistle, then covertly assassinate her (since Basim will sit her down, nobody will be alarmed at this).
  3. At the Eastern corner of the Observatory, the Tha'abeen will stand around under a large gate. This gives you a perfect chance to Pickpocket her if you were already standing behind her.
  4. Another Pickpocketing opportunity is at the Southern corner of the Observatory, where the Tha'abeen observes a market stall at the North end of the bridge to the House of Wisdom.
  5. The Tha'abeen will stop for a few moments next to the fountain at the southeast side of the House of Wisdom. This is an excellent spot to Pickpocket her.
  6. The Tha'abeen will pass by two benches just East of the House of Wisdom's fountain.

Harbiyah - Mysterious Shard 1

Harbiyah - Mysterious Shard 1

  • Location: Harbiyah - Quadrangle of the Persians - Soap Boiler's District

Only a single guard protects this Tha'abeen. However, this makes this particular shard unique because she'll stand in her designated spot (the south end of the bridge at the northeast corner of the Soap Boiler's District) until her guard is killed. Thus, to covertly get her shard, you'll have to kill the guard first to get her moving.

Do note that the Tha'been will first go south to the Soap Boiler's market, then proceed on her usual route.

  1. If you want to kill the Tha'abeen at her starting location, you should hide behind the large bush next to the bridge and Whistle the Tha'abeen over for the kill. Make sure she's within the bush as you do this so that her guard and any bystanders won't notice.
  2. As the Tha'abeen travels along the East side of the Soap Boiler's District, you can set yourself up on a bench for a Whistle-Assassination combo. This will go completely unnoticed by the public.
  3. The spot where the Tha'abeen stops just North of the bridge is a perfect place to assassinate her if you killed her guard, thanks to the bushes she stands next to but faces away from.
  4. She'll also stop ever-so-briefly next to the bridge into the Round City. If you're hidden in the nearby bush, you can Assassinate her after luring her in with a Whistle.
  5. A bench on the road northwest to the Damascus Gate Prison provides an excellent spot to lure the Tha'abeen in for an Assassination.
  6. Just South of the Damascus Gate Prison, the Tha'abeen will sit beside a small explosive red pot. Hit it with a Throwing Knife for a kill!
  7. East of the Great Mosque, the Tha'abeen will stop to observe a pottery stall. With this being a public space, an assassination is discouraged here.
  8. The benches along the East side of the Great Mosque are an excellent spot to assassinate the Tha'abeen if she's alone since Basim will place the target on the bench if he starts the assassination sitting on it.
  9. After the above, the Tha'abeen will pause momentarily near the Munadi crier. This is a very public area, so this pause in her routine is only suitable for making pickpocketing easier.
  10. After pausing for a bit, the Tha'abeen will rest here close to a hay cart. This is a good spot to Whistle her over for a kill since any nearby civilians will be looking the other way on their own business.

Harbiyah - Mysterious Shard 2

Harbiyah - Mysterious Shard 2

  • Location: Harbiyah - Khuld

Two regular guards protect this Ta'abeen. Their patrol takes them across most of the Khuld district; however, the north and northwestern parts of their route have no opportunities for covert assassination or pickpocketing.

  • At the northeastern port of their route, close to the Prince's Palace, the trio will stop near the river briefly. Use the tall bushes here for a completely covert whistle assassination, or just use the smaller ones to creep up unnoticed to pickpocket the mysterious shard.
  • The group will stop to rest at the base of an archway in the plaza outside the Khurasan Guardhouse. Next to them is a small explosive red pot: blow it up with a Throwing Knife to kill all three men.
  • The trio will stop to observe the market stalls along the southern part of their route. Chuck a Throwing Knife at the large sack of red spice to create a cloud that will momentarily obscure any assassinations you make within it.
  • To the west of a large archway will be a street with large bushes on the sides, letting you perform whistle-assassinations that will not be noticed.
  • At the southwestern corner of their patrol, the group will go into an alley and stand between two flowery wooden pergolas. Climb up to the roof of the building to find an explosive red pot that you can throw at them for the kill.

Karkh - Mysterious Shard 1

Karkh - Mysterious Shard 1

  • Location: Karkh - Fief of Rayasanah / Sharqiyah / Tabik

This Tha'abeen member is potentially the easiest one to get their Mysterious Shard from since guards never accompany her. This means you can walk up to her and Pickpocket the shard from her belt! The downside is that she has one of the most extensive patrol routes of any Tha'abeen in the game (it takes her an hour to do a single lap), but as you'll see, there are many benches to be found along her path.

advertisem*nt

  1. The westernmost point of the Tha'abeen's route is just outside Basra Gate at the corner of the Qadi District Office. There are no inherent opportunities here, so a Throwing Knife from the rooftops is the only real assassination method here.
  2. There's a bench at this spot that you can use for a Whistle-Assassination. Basim will sit the body on the bench, meaning the kill will be completely unnoticed!
  3. At this spot, the Tha'abeen will loiter next to two guards and a sack of red spice. Hit the sack with any weapon to throw up a dust cloud, which can cover you as you assassinate the Tha'abeen. Alternatively, you can use the bench just to the west of this spot to do a covert Whistle-Assassiantion.
  4. There's a bench just South of the Harbor Camp that you can use for a covert whistle assassination.
  5. Yet another bench is on the North side of the bridge from the Harbor Camp to The Great Garrison; however, its position makes it a bit tricky to lure the Tha'abeen over since she may have to walk around the edge of the bridge to get to you.
  6. Another bench can be found close to the front gate of The Great Garrison.
  7. Near the southwest corner of The Great Garrison, the Tha'abeen will stop and lean on a hay cart. However, your murder will be in plain view of the public, so you should only take this one if you're okay with raising your notoriety. You may want to consider one of the benches nearby to the southwest instead.
  8. A bench can be found at the northern corner of the Confiscation Warehouse.
  9. At the southernmost point of the Tha'abeen's route, she'll stop for a few moments. There's another bench nearby here, just East of the Eastern end of the bridge crossing the river.
  10. Near the southern corner of the Cookmen's Quarter is yet another bench you can use.
  11. Near the western corner of the Cookmen's Quarter are three benches to use! What luxury!

Karkh - Mysterious Shard 2

Karkh - Mysterious Shard 2

  • Location: Karkh - Tabik

This Tha'abeen wanders Karkh's Tabik district and is accompanied by a single guard. Their patrol route covers the streets southwest of the Bazaar, as well as the alleys South across the river.

  1. To the North of the bridge southwest of the Bazaar are two benches that the Tha'abeen passes right in front of. You can use a Whistle to lure her in and then assassinate her. As with all bench kills, Basim will sit him down on the bench for a completely covert kill. Yes, this will work even with the guard watching!
  2. Between the river bridge and the Tax Collector's Mansion, the Tha'abeen will pass by a bench you can use.
  3. The duo will stop briefly at the southeast corner of the Tax Collector's Mansion. There's a small explosive red pot above the rooftop that you can throw to kill them both at once!
  4. In the northwestern part of the group's patrol, they'll pass through a narrow section with a musician. There are two benches here that you can use to lure in and assassinate the Tha'abeen.
  5. Just west of the Bazaar building, the duo will stop and loiter underneath a wooden beam high above. This is an excellent spot to get a Throwing Knife kill from the rooftops.
  6. The Tha'abeen passes by another bench just west of the Bazaar's western entrance.
  7. At the southern corner of the Bazaar, the pair will stand next to several crates and sacks of red spice. Strike the spice sack with any weapon to throw up a cloud of dust, disguising any assassinations you make within it.
  8. On the riverbank near the eastern corner of the Bazaar, the group will stop and stand very close to a group of people. You can carefully hide within the group and pick out the Tha'abeen without her noticing.
  9. At the south end of the wooden bridge, the group will stop to sit down. There are no environmental opportunities here, so you'll have to rely on a good ol' Throwing Knife from the rooftop to make this work.
  10. Southwest of the wooden bridge's southern end, the two will pass close to a bench you can use to lure the Tha'abeen.
  11. Southwest of the House of Poulterers, the pair will stop near a market stand. They're quite close to a group of people, making this another spot where you can Pickpocket the shard off the Tha'abeen.

Round City - Mysterious Shard 1

Round City - Mysterious Shard 1

  • Location: Round City - Administrative District

The Tha'abeen holding this shard wanders through the Administrative District in the Round City. A single guard protects him, and his route takes him around the complex surrounding the district's Viewpoint and the Postal Bureau to the southwest.

  1. As the group walks past the western side of the Postal Bureau, there's a bench here that you can use for a covert assassination. Whistle the Tha'abeen over, and Basim will kill them and sit them on the bench. Even the guard won't notice it!
  2. At the southeast corner of the Postal Bureau, the duo will stop and loiter next to an explosive red pot! Chuck a Throwing Knife at it to kill them both!
  3. There are two benches on the Eastern side of the Postal Bureau you can use to assassinate a member of the group covertly.
  4. Between the Postal Bureau and the Viewpoint complex, the pair will stop at a fountain close to some groups of people. You can hide in the crowd to covertly Pickpocket the Tha'abeen if you wish.
  5. On the southwestern side of the Viewpoint complex, there are two benches you can use for a covert assassination.
  6. There are two more benches at the northeastern part of the Viewpoint complex.
  7. Southwest of a Munadi, there's a bench along the Tha'abeen's patrol route that you can use.

Round City - Mysterious Shard 2

Round City - Mysterious Shard 2

  • Location: Round City - Residential District

The Tha'abeen holding this shard can be found in the Residential District of the Round City (although he does cross into the Commander's District on the "Cartographer street". His patrol covers the areas around the Harem. He's protected by two spear guards, which makes it a fair bit more challenging to Whistle him over for a bench assassination.

  1. In the street south of the Viewpoint are some benches. You can Whistle the Tha'abeen over to you and assassinate him from it. Basim will do this covertly and will sit the body on the bench, fooling even his own two guards.
  2. East of the Viewpoint and south of the Harem, there's another bench on the street if you want to take a crack at a whistle assassination.
  3. In the street east of Kufa Gate, the trio passes by some benches you can use for a covert assassination.
  4. The group will stop to listen to the Munadi just outside Kufa Gate. Thanks to the people standing behind them, this is a perfect spot to Pickpocket the Tha'abeen unnoticed.
  5. On the north side of a building the trio slip through, there's a bench you can use to your liking.
  6. At the Southwest corner of the Harem, there are a great many benches you can use as well.
  7. The group will stop momentarily at the corner of the fountain outside the Harem. No assassination opportunities are nearby, so this spot is best utilized with a Throwing Knife from a rooftop.
  8. On the west side of the Viewpoint building, the group will stop in a meadow-like pergola area, and the Tha'abeen will be on his own to observe the fountain. The bench closest to this fountain is the best spot on their patrol for a covert assassination since you don't even need to Whistle to get him close enough!
  9. Northeast of the Viewpoint, the group will stop to chat with some guards. The nearby benches provide an excellent spot to lure the Tha'abeen in for the kill.
  10. There are a few benches along the "Cartographer's" main street that you can use.
  11. Just west of Basra Gate, the group will be in a side alley next to a small explosive red pot. Chuck a Throwing Knife at the pot to kill all three in the group!
  12. As the trio goes through the alleys southeast of the Viewpoint, they'll stop at some large spice sacks as the Tha'abeen checks out the storefront. Hit the sack to throw up a cloud of spice, which will conceal any assassination you make within it.

Wilderness - Mysterious Shard 1

Wilderness - Mysterious Shard 1

  • Location: Wilderness - Wilderness North - Anbar

The first Mysterious Shard is in Anbar, close to where you finish the Old Wounds main quest. His route takes him from Basim’s home suburbs, east across the bridge past the Munadi, south past the Viewpoint and out the city's gates, west across the river, then north through the farms back to the start.

  1. The group will stop at the corner of a building just north of Anbar’s Western gate. There’s a throwable explosive pot above them that you can use for the kill.
  2. Between the Munadi and the Viewpoint, the Tha’abeen will stand next to a cart of hay with both guards looking in the other direction so you can kill him hiding inside the cart.
  3. After leaving the city, the trio will stop between two houses at the river's end. This is a great spot to kill the Tha’abeen with a Throwing Knife from the rooftop.
  4. After the trio crosses the river, the Tha’abeen stops to examine the crops beside the path while his guards aren’t looking. You can hide in the crops to kill him without being noticed. You may find this the best spot, as zero witnesses are here!
  5. Outside the western gate, all three will stop next to an explosive red pot. Hit it with a Throwing Knife to kill all three at once!

Wilderness - Mysterious Shard 2

Wilderness - Mysterious Shard 2

  • Location: Wilderness - Wilderness South - Jarjaraya

This Tha'ameem member's patrol takes him through the fields West of Jarjaraya. A Captain and a Horn Blower accompany him, so it's a balance between the toughest guard in the game and one who can call for reinforcements.

advertisem*nt

  1. The best assassination spot is the western part of the Tha'ameem's countryside route, as the group passes by several tall bushes that obscure the kill from view if a guard ventures into them. Use a Whistle to lure each man in until you get the Tha’abeen and grab his shard.
  2. One spot the Tha’abeen stops is a cart of hay near the Southwestern entrance of Jarjaraya. This is an ideal location; however, the guards do not turn to face away from the haystack, making it problematic at best.
