Alan Titchmarsh has opened up about the knee problems holding him back from taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.

The much loved gardener has reportedly been asked to sign up for the show six times, but his wife Alison doesn't believe he'd be able to cope.

Alan, 74, spilled: "Alison was a dance tutor and she is convinced my knees wouldn’t stay the course.

"On top of that, it is a huge commitment; you start in September and you might be there until Christmas.

"There’s too much other stuff I need to be getting on with," he added to Saga Exceptional.

Alan has since told Express.co.uk: "My knees are fine at the moment!

"I am just aware that I need to respect them and be gentle to them at the age of 74 - then hopefully they’ll last a while longer!"

The Love Your Garden star underwent surgery on both of his knees back in 2018, after damage sustained by his many years of bending down during gardening.

He told The Mirror: “I have had what is known as knee arthroscopy on both my knees and my surgeon did it to investigate the reason for my knee pain.

"While he was doing it he removed all my damaged tissue and cartilage - I had it all cleared out and they feel so much better."

He went on to say his bad knees were the result "of a lot of kneeling over the years from gardening" but claimed he was back to being a spring chicken at the time.

Alan faced more health issues back in 2021 when he was hospitalised with severe chest pains he believed was a heart attack.

Recalling the moment to The Sunday Post, he said: “At first, I thought it was indigestion as I know that can give you chest pains — but it didn’t wear off.

“I didn’t know what was wrong and although I didn’t think it was a heart attack, because the pain wasn’t going down my arm, it was frightening.

“I hoped I wasn’t going to die, and I was hanging on in there, but the pain was so acute at one point I thought it might be a blessed relief.”

Alan went on to say it was “every bit as agonising as a heart attack" but doctors later determined it was gallstones.

A history of heart disease runs in Alan’s family after his father suddenly died aged just 62.

The gardener previously revealed he had been taking medication to help ward off the disease, telling The Mirror: “I’m on statins.

"I wish I wasn’t. I don’t like the thought of taking tablets every day, but I’m following my doctor’s advice. He thinks it’s a good idea.

"The thing is, the men in my family have had a tendency to die from heart disease at a relatively young age. My dad, for instance, died suddenly in 1986 from a heart attack, aged just 62."
