Advantages of Beamforming | Disadvantages of Beamforming (2024)

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of beamforming techniques. It mentions beamforming advantages or benefits and beamforming disadvantages or drawbacks. It provides links on different types of beamforming techniques.

What is Beamforming?

Introduction:
The formation of beam in the desired direction with appropriate power is known as beamforming.Beamforming employs facility to vary power of the beams and their directions with the help of amplitude/phasevariations. Antenna arrays are used instead of single antenna in beamforming system in modern wireless systems.Earlier days, mechanical rotation based mechanism was employed for steering the antenna or antenna array andseparate mechanism for power amplication of beams (i.e. antenna patterns) was used.

Following are the types of beamforming techniques.
•Analog Beamforming:In this type, precoding is applied to analog signal after DAC and before transmission over the air.
•Digital Beamforming: In this type, precoding is applied to digital signal or baseband signal before DAC.After the DAC the beamformed signal is transmitted over the air after RF conversion.
•Hybrid Beamforming: It utilizes benefits of both analog and digital beamforming types. Here precoding is applied in both analog domain and digital domain at radio frequencies (RF) andbaseband frequencies respectively.

Beamforming equations used in analog type:
Wk= ak *ejsin(θk)
Wk= ak*cos(θk) + j* ak sin(θk)
Where,
Wk represents complex weight for kth antenna in the array.
ak is relative amplitude of weight.
θk is phase shift of weight.
➨Weights are being applied to analog signals in analog beamforming.

Benefits or advantages of Beamforming

Following are the benefits or advantages of Beamforming:
➨It boosts the power of beams in the desired direction and hence farthest subscribers can also be reachedby telecom cell towers or base stations. This increases supporting capacity of a cellular tower interms of number of subscribers.
➨It can also reduce the power of the beam for nearby subscribers and hence interference issuesnear to the cell towers can be avoided.
➨As mentioned it increases C/N ratio of the signal and hence the signal can withstand againstnoisy and attenuating channel environment. This increases coverage capacity of the cell tower or base station.
➨It is widely used with MIMO in latest wireless technologies viz. Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e), LTE,LTE-Advanced, 5G etc. due to its immunity against fading and interference.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of Beamforming

Following are the disadvantages of Beamforming:
➨Hardware complexity is higher due to use of multiple antennas and otherhardware systems.
➨The beamforming system requires use of advanced high processing DSP chip due to useof mathemical algorithms in the design.
➨Due to increased hardware resources and use of advanced DSP chip, cost ofbeamforming system is higher compare to non-beamforming system.
➨Power requirement in beamforming system is higher due to use of more resources.Hence battery in beamforming system drains faster.

FAQs

What are the advantages of beamforming? ›

Using beamforming, wireless access points can direct their signal in a particular direction. The advantages are substantial if the receiving device points in this direction: faster throughput, fewer interferences, and improved signal.

What are the disadvantages of beam forming? ›

Beamforming does have limitations, however:
  • It sometimes requires more computing resources and power for beamforming calculations.
  • Digital and massive MIMO beamforming systems may be more complex, especially considering more antennas and other hardware used.
  • Its cost tends to be higher than traditional systems.

What are the benefits of 5G beamforming? ›

5G beamforming allows Verizon to make 5G connections more focused toward a receiving device. For example, a typical 5G small cell that does not employ beamforming during its multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission will not be able to narrowly concentrate or focus its transmit beams to a particular area.

What is the difference between beamforming and non beamforming? ›

Beamforming is a technique that focuses a wireless signal towards a specific receiving device, rather than have the signal spread in all directions, like from a broadcast antenna. The resulting direct connection is faster and more reliable than it would be without beamforming.

Is beamforming good or bad? ›

This has clear advantages: Beamforming increases the range and quality of the Wi-Fi signal and boosts the overall efficiency of data transmission. Additionally, there tends to be less signal interference between different end devices because the signals are sent in a more targeted manner with less overlap.

What are the two types of beamforming? ›

These are either analog or digital, or switched and adaptive beamforming. Anything classified into one of these areas then gets sub-classified into different categories depending on the type of antenna array used (linear, circular, rectangular, etc.).

What is the purpose of beam forming? ›

Beamforming is a technique used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of received signals, eliminate undesirable interference sources, and focus transmitted signals to specific locations. Beamforming is central to systems with sensor arrays, including MIMO wireless communications systems such as 5G, LTE, and WLAN.

What is one advantage of a beam? ›

1️⃣ Structural support: Beams are essential elements in building construction as they provide crucial structural support. They distribute the weight of a building or structure evenly, ensuring stability and preventing collapse. 2️⃣ Flexibility: Beams offer flexibility in design and construction.

What are the disadvantages of the forming process? ›

Forming: Disadvantages

Thickness Limitations – There are thickness limitations to these processes. Manufacturing Cost – cycle time may be slower, the equipment has high power requirements, and high equipment and tooling costs.

Does beamforming make a difference? ›

Beamforming can improve both the speed and range of your Wi-Fi connection.

Which is better MU MIMO or beamforming? ›

Without beamforming, signals are sent in every possible direction. Beamforming and MU-MIMO work together. Since the signal is more efficiently used, MU-MIMO can help increase WiFi range and speed on a WiFi network.

How does beamforming improve network? ›

Beamforming technology directs a wireless signal to a single receiving device rather than spreading the signal in all directions as a broadcast antenna does. With Beamforming, the direct connection that results is quicker and more dependable.

What is beamforming in layman's terms? ›

Beamforming is a radio frequency technique that helps optimize signal strength and minimize interference by targeting wireless signals towards a specific endpoint or receiving device using an array of sensors and antennas.

What is another name for beamforming? ›

Beamforming or spatial filtering is a signal processing technique used in sensor arrays for directional signal transmission or reception.

Should beamforming be enabled? ›

The advice for “General Usage” applies to both Explicit Beamforming and Implicit Beamforming. With the understanding that Beamforming typically improve your medium-long range performance. You should only consider to enable beamforming when you have medium-big sized house.

What is the purpose of beamforming?

What are the advantages of at beam? ›

Steel T-beams and their unique “T” shape offer several advantages that make them a popular choice in various construction and structural applications:
  • Cost-effective.
  • Higher load-bearing capacity.
  • Increased durability.
  • Easier to produce.
  • Longer span capability.
  • Versatile and customizable.
