Add Volume Purchase Program (VPP) iOS apps from the Intune for Education portal. This article describes how to manage VPP-purchased apps that have been synced to Microsoft Intune.
Both free and paid-for apps are available to buy in volume through the App Store. To install free iOS apps without a VPP token, see how to add free iOS apps in Intune.
What is the Volume Purchase Program?
The Apple Volume Purchase Program lets organizations buy app licenses in bulk and manage them through their mobile device manager (MDM). With an MDM, such as Intune for Education, licenses can be managed and then silently deployed over-the-air to student devices. A VPP/MDM partnership is ideal in classrooms and organizations where the same app is needed on many devices.
Before you begin
To view and manage licenses from the Intune for Education portal, you must first:
Purchase apps through an Apple VPP vendor or through the Apple School Manager > Apps and Books store.
Transfer existing purchased licenses to the appropriate Intune VPP token. See the Apple education support site to learn how to transfer licenses.
Search and add apps
Complete the following steps to search and add paid-for iOS apps from the Intune for Education portal.
Free apps are made available for purchase directly from the portal. However, these apps are made available so that users without a VPP account can easily get them. If you plan to deploy free apps silently and in volume to your school's devices, you should purchase them through the Apple VPP or Apple School Manager websites.
Sign in to the Intune for Education portal.
Click Apps.
From the app list, under iOS Apps, click New app.
Select the country/region from where you're purchasing the app.
Type in the app's full or partial name. Intune returns a list of relevant results from the App Store.
Select the app.
A message appears that prompts you to complete your purchase through Apple School Manager. Click the link to go to Apple School Manager.
Follow the steps in Apple School Manager to complete your purchase. You'll be prompted to assign your licenses to the appropriate location.
Return to Intune for Education > Apps. Your app will appear in the iOS Apps list. If you don't see it right away, wait a few minutes and refresh your page.
View app details
Apps appear in the app list, under iOS Apps. Click the app to view its:
Overview: Lists app name, publisher, and date you added it to Intune. Also lists the number of licenses available to assign.
Groups: Lists all groups that are assigned the app. Change group assignments here or go to the details page for a specific group.
Install status: Shows details about the app's installation, such as the device it was assigned to. The status also lists last check-in time and if the installation was a success, failure, or still-in-progress.
Reassign VPP-purchased licenses
VPP-purchased apps can't be deleted from Intune for Education. However, you can remove a user from an assigned group, or remove the entire group from assignment.
On the Assignments tab, choose whether the app will be Required or Available for enrolled devices. Choose Add group under the assignment type you've selected, then on the Select groups pane choose the Microsoft Entra user or device groups to which you want to assign the app.
Email: Email address on record for the VPP account. Service token: For Apple School Manager, sign in to your account at school.apple.com.At the bottom left of the page, click "settings" then navigate to "Apps and Books" then click download next to the server token.
The Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and the Volume Purchase Program (VPP) are now completely integrated into Apple Business Manager, so organizations can bring together everything needed to deploy Apple devices. These programs will no longer be available starting December 1, 2019.
Go to DEVICE MANAGEMENT > MDM. Select Apple, then select VPP. The Configure VPP page is displayed. Click add token to connect your organization's MDM server to Apple's VPP.
Apple VPP is a simple, easy to use solution provided by Apple for free to enable IT admins to bulk purchase, distribute and manage apps and books on Apple devices for organizations and educational institutions.
Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.Select Apps > All apps > Add.In the Select app type pane, under the available Store app types, select iOS store app.Click Select.
To do this in Intune go to the Intune Management Portal (https://intune.microsoft.com) > Tenant Administration > Connectors and Tokens > Apple VPP Tokens. Here you can create a new token, and sync (download software to Intune) for an existing token.
To renew an Apple Business Manager location token (Apple VPP token), you can follow the process of downloading the token from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager again. Subsequently, update the existing token in Microsoft Intune with the newly downloaded one.
Apple Volume Purchase Program is free to use. Anyone using Apple devices for business can make use of Apple VPP free of cost. You have to only pay for the purchased app licenses for paid apps. Apps available for free in the App Store or Mac Store are distributed free of cost using Apple VPP.
You can use a purchase order to get VPP Credit that can be redeemed on the VPP Store, or complete your transaction with a credit card. Institutions can get VPP Credit using a purchase order, just as they can when buying any other Apple product directly from Apple or from an Apple Authorised Reseller.
