Did you check your Purchase History to SEE if the item was there? Sometimes items put in the Cart become 'purchased' without the buyer realizing it. [It's not something the seller would be able to do.]
I'm not sure what you're 'smelling' or what you think eBay is 'condoning'.
IF you already had committed to buy one of the items ... the seller wouldn't have been able to 'combine shipping'. And IF you had complained to the seller about having NOT agreeing to buy the item ... then cancelling the item (saying it was your request) doesn't sound unreasonable.
I may not be fully understanding what specifically you are concerned about in communicating with the seller ... other than the fact that the seller wasn't great at communication.

I doubt that a single eBay seller would agree with you on that point. [I'm a buyer only BTW.]
