A Look at Mordred (Fate) Figures
The Nasuverse’s Mordred sure has an interesting origin story. She is the daughter (although she’d say “son”) born of incest from the sperm of Artoria Pendragon and her sister, Morgan le Fay. But wait, Artoria is a woman, so how did she have sperm? The answer is magic. The answer is always magic. Artoria became psudeo-male thanks to Merlin’s magecraft, which means she/he could now produce sperm. But this pregnancy was not consensual. Artoria didn’t want this to happen, but Morgan did. She secretly took King Arthur’s sperm and inserted it into her ovary, giving birth to Mordred, a homunculus clone of Artoria. And that’s just the story of her birth. Her whole life was pretty sad and her death was equally tragic.
But that’s all in the past! Mordred is now a Heroic Spirit, a Saber-class Servant with incredible power who can lift a Ford-150 over her head with one hand! At least we assume so, from what we’ve seen of Mordred’s abilities in Fate/Apocrypha. She makes for a great anime character. And where there are great anime characters, there are also excellent collectible figures. Tokyo Otaku Mode has had quite a few versions of Mordred, the Saber of Red, in figure form, because many Fate fans adore her. We’d like to present a few of those to you now!
Fate/Apocrypha Saber of Red: The Great Holy Grail War 1/7 Scale Figure
First up in our article is a piece produced by Aniplex that’s still available to order. It’s already been released, after several reviews by customers, it still has a perfect 5 star rating. The painting job is wonderful, and Aniplex was able to produce a rare red hue to Modred’s outfit. The coloring alone makes this Mordred stand out among other Mordred figures in which she’s wearing the same dress. Not only that, but this dynamic pose by Mordred almost puts her on top as the most action-packed figure of her ever offered on TOM. The only figure that beats her out is the one we’ll discuss next.
The look on Mordred’s face is appropriately fierce and hungry for battle. Just as we would expect from the spawn of Artoria Pendragon. While she might have the same face as Saber from the Fate/stay night story, her hair is a darker blonde and more unkempt.
We love how her enormous sword Clarent is being held by Mordred here. It should be impossible for someone so small to maneuver a weapon that size and weight with such ease. But Heroic Spirits like Mordred are known to defy the laws of physics. It’s a real demonstration of how physically strong Mordred really is.
Fate/Apocrypha Saber of Red (Mordred) 1/8 Scale Figure
Three sculptors - KAKU, Koudai Abe (Fenrir), Mitsuru Saito (Phat!) - worked together to bring to life what may be the deadliest depiction of Mordred that’s ever been produced by any company. Mordred’s armor in this figure looks like Saber’s armor…if Saber’s armor took steroids. It actually looks pretty evil, to the point where you’d mistake Mordred as a Berserker instead of a Saber. We figure the look is a result of her influence from Morgan le Fay. The armor makes for a violent and tough-looking Mordred, making it appear like she’s a man. Which is great, because that’s what she’s going for!
The armor isn’t the only fantastic thing that catches our eye. Clarent raised up high by Saber of Red looks gorgeous as well, lit up in purple and blue paint. It looks distinctly different from the Clarent sword in the previous figure discussed. That’s because Clarent has transformed here to Clarent Blood Arthur: Rebellion Against My Beautiful Father. What a name. It’s as wickedly powerful as it looks.
Fate/Apocrypha Saber of Red -Mordred- 1/7 Scale Figure (Re-Run)
Underneath all that armor is a gorgeous young woman, and sculptor Yukiusa proved it with this piece manufactured by Aquamarine. Saber of Red is dressed here in her iconic fatigues. Not all Servants are known for their casual look, but Mordred is definitely one of the exceptions. Mordred may not like to be called a woman, but she can definitely pull off a feminine aura with that white tube top on, and her rough cut denim shorts that are so short they’re nearly non-existent. There are other figures of Mordred in this outfit, sure, but they don’t capture her looking cool and spicy like this one does. We love how she’s holding the jacket over her shoulder and looking back, with her other hand about to rest on her hip. And we’re not the only one who dig that. All the reviews on this figure are positive. In fact, it was so good that it got a re-run. But that re-run is also sold out. Maybe someday we’ll get lucky and have a second re-run of this hot Mordred figure!
