We are now in 2023. It is a new year with a new resolution to be a better version of ourselves.
One aspect that we can improve is our finances.
With a strong and stable finance, we can have a strong physical upkeep and mental peace of mind. Having wealth permits us to aid family and community in times of sickness and hardship.
The foundation for a stable finance is in our spendings.
No matter how much we earn, if we spend moderately according to our means, we will have enough to save and invest for the future.
In the previous article, I shared 4 Quranic verse encouraging us Muslims to spend moderately, to be just in between being a miser and a spendthrift.
In this article, I will share 4 sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him encouraging us Muslims to spend moderately.
Sunnah is the actions, sayings and approval of the Prophet peace be upon Him. It is an important main source for Muslims alongside the holy Quran.
Spend according to your means
Sayyidatina Asma', daughter of Sayyidina Abu Bakr, reported that abe came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) and said:
Apostle of Allah, I have nothing with me, but only, that which is given to me by Zubair (for household expenses). Is there any sin for me if I spend out of that which is given to me (by Zabair)?
Upon this, the Holy Prophet said:
Spend according to your means; and do not hoard, for Allah will withhold from you.
Hadith narrated by Sayyidatina Asma’, recorded in Sahih Muslim in the book of Zakat.

Not being in poverty
Narrated by Sayyidina Abdullah bin Mas’ud, the Prophet peace be upon him said:
The person who sticks to the middle path and moderation in spending will not be poor
This hadith is recorded in musnad Imam Ahmad and tafsir ibn Kathir surah Al-Furqan verse 67. Its chain of narration is weak.
A sign of wisdom
Narrated by Ibn Ad-Darda’, the Prophet peace be upon him said
It is wise of a man to be balanced in his livelihood
Hadith is recorded in musnad Imam Ahmad.
Spend without extravagance
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
‘Eat and drink, give charity and wear clothes, as long as that does not involve any extravagance or vanity
Hadith recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah.
All of these 4 hadiths guides us to the importance of balanced spending for a Muslim.
This in accordance to what Allah said in Surah Al-Furqan verse 67
(Among the attributes of the believing servants of Allah) are those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but are in a just balance between them
