Civil Engineering Job Description & Core Responsibilities

As a civil engineer, you will be responsible for planning, designing and overseeing the construction phase, and also the maintenance of, properties, building structures, roads, railways, airports, dams, bridges, water sewerage systems and other important infrastructures. It is a hugely rewarding and challenging role that requires a unique set of skills, qualities and attributes in order to perform the necessary duties to the relevant high standards of safety and productivity.

There are generally two types of civil engineer: consulting engineers and contracting engineers. Consulting engineers will assist with the design aspect of projects, whilst contracting engineers use the designs during the construction phase of a project.

Common duties associated with civil engineers

• Carry out assessments and feasibility assessments in preparation for the project planning and implementation stages;
• Conduct on-site inspections and advise developers and key stakeholders;
• Undertake calculations to assess the feasibility of the desired project;
• Liaise with clients, stakeholders and contractors;
• Create civil engineering project plans, schedules and timescales;
• Create schedule of rates contracts;
• Liaise with various stakeholders and clients, including Local Authorities, architects, principal designers and other interested parties;
• Schedule material purchases in line with the project specification;
• Ensure the sustainability of all civil engineering projects;
• Be responsible for ensuring each project runs smoothly, on time and within the budget restrictions specified;
• Operate to the highest standards of professionalism and safety standards at all times.
