Who qualifies for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library? ›

Who Can Get Books? All 2.4 million children in California under the age of five will become eligible, regardless of family income, as local programs expand across all areas of the state. Just sign up and an age-appropriate book should arrive at the beginning of the month, usually six to eight weeks after enrolling.

In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her county's preschool children and their families.

Imagination Library books are specially selected age-appropriate, high-quality titles. These books are delivered to registered children each month from birth to age five. Each one is personalized with the child's name and mailed directly to the child's home.

Depending on when you register your child, it may take up to eight to twelve weeks for the first book to arrive. After that, the books will come every month. For example, if you registered your child on January 6th and were approved by your local affiliate in January, you would receive your first book in March.

Parents read aloud more to their children and were more comfortable reading as a result of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Parents reported their children owned more books as a result of participating in the program.

Do all kids get the same books from Imagination Library? ›

We mail out books by age group. Every child born in the same year receives the same books, appropriate for their age. Twins will receive the exact book each month. However, because the books are addressed to each child, they will both have built their own library of quality books when they graduate from the programs.

Parents, Grandparents, and/or Guardians can register their child/children online or at one of our registration sites to receive free books from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library if the child resides in one of our service areas and is within 0-5 years of age.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland.

Goals for Expansion

The expansion, made possible by bipartisan legislation SB 1183 (Grove) which was signed into law by Governor Newsom last year, allows all California children under the age of five to be eligible to enroll in the program to receive a free book every month, regardless of the families' income.

If a child is signed up at birth, they'll receive up to 60 different books by the time they reach the age of five, when they officially age out. There are multiple bilingual (English and Spanish) titles available throughout the collection.

Each year, the esteemed Blue Ribbon Book Selection Committee, a specially selected panel of early childhood literacy experts, is responsible for reviewing hundreds of potential titles for inclusion in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
