MAIN FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENT:Test different denominations of coins and reject counterfeit ones whileaccepting correct coins to be sorted and counted

DESIGN PARAMETER: CoinTester

GEOMETRY/STRUCTURE:

Center: coin to be identified;
Left: coil that generates B field;
Right: coil that generates current from B;
Transverse line represents B field

Figure 2: Electric Identification Probe

EXPLANATION OF HOW IT WORKS/ IS USED:

1. User deposits coin into coin slot on outside of machine. Coin slot is dimensioned tothe width and height for the thickest and largest diameter coin to be accepted.
2. Coin rolls down a chute and past identification probe that determines the denominationby the coin’s material properties. The probe consists of two solenoids withtheir axis perpendicular to the longitudinal wall of the chute. Current is runthrough one solenoid which then generates a B field perpendicular to the coin axis of revoluion. The magnetic field passes through thecoin, is attenuated by the coin's material properties and geometry before being receivedby the solenoid at the opposite end. The B field passing along the axis ofthe second coil generates a specific pattern of electric current, which can be matchedwith the correct coin.
3. a) Coin also activates switch that b) pulls slide member toward wall of chute (intopage) by means of electromagnet, thereby preventing another coin from entering.
4. The probe sends information to timing mechanism for turning on of electromagneticdevice that opens flap armature.
5. Coin falls down chute and onto first sorting weigher. The number of denominations to beaccepted determines the number of sorting weighers (e.g. quarter,dime,nickel =3 weighers).Each sorting weigher is pivoted and contains a slot dimensioned to diameter of specificcoin. The sorting weighers are arranged by size of coin to be accepted, with the largestcoin size weigher on top. The left arm of the sorter weigher holds a counterweight thatwill be lifted only if the coin is the correct weight.
6. Sorting weigher pivots under the weight of coin and coin rolls toward chute.
7. Electromagnet turns on and the coin’s specific flap armature opens momentarilyallowing coin to fall through chute.
8. Coin rolls down chute to be sorted.

DOMINANT PHYSICS:

tI=time to i event

Opening of Flap armature: ttotal = tcoin + tarmature
tcoin = timefor specific coin to roll from probe chute onto sorting weigher + time for sorting weigherto pivot and coin to roll off sorting weigher
tarmature =time for armature to rise enough for coin to continue down chute

LIMITING PHYSICS:

The performance/use of the machine is limited by the position of the machine. If themachine is not seated on a level plane, then the coin will take longer to roll down thechute and the timing mechanism will open the flap armature before the coin can passthrough.

WHERE TO FIND COINT TESTERS:

This design for the coin tester limits it to places where either electricity can byobtained or a battery connected. Coin testers have few moving parts and simple circuitry,making them inexpensive to manufacture. They are in most vending machines and slotmachines where counterfeit coins need to be detected.

2.972 How a Coin Tester Works? ›

The magnetic field passes through the coin, is attenuated by the coin's material properties and geometry before being received by the solenoid at the opposite end. The B field passing along the axis of the second coil generates a specific pattern of electric current, which can be matched with the correct coin.

How does a coin reader work? ›

Coin acceptors

The coin acceptor identifies the coin according to its mass (i.e. weight), diameter, thickness, metal composition and/or magnetism, and then sends an appropriate electrical signal via its output connection. The next step is generally performed by the banknote-to-coins exchanger.

How do you use the precious coin tester app? ›

Hold the coin on the tip of one finger near the mic of your phone/tablet, and knock the coin rapidely with another hard object. Hold still the coin while it rings. When the sound of coin has diminished, knock it again. - Which results are good?

How does a coin sensor work? ›

An inserted coin falls upon a piezoelectric element and a sufficiently large signal causes the micropocessor to activate a LED in a photoelectric sensor. The coin then moves through the photoelectric sensor which determines the net cross-sectional area of the coin.

How does a coin tester work? ›

The magnetic field passes through the coin, is attenuated by the coin's material properties and geometry before being received by the solenoid at the opposite end. The B field passing along the axis of the second coil generates a specific pattern of electric current, which can be matched with the correct coin.

What is the best app to scan coins for value? ›

CoinSnap is the perfect app for coin enthusiasts of all levels. From beginners to experienced numismatists, CoinSnap has something for everyone.

Can Coinstar detect fake coins? ›

Coin validation technology: Our coin-counting technology is designed to detect and reject any foreign coins or other objects that may be mixed in with the coins.

What happens if you put fake money in a vending machine? ›

The machine collects the details and compares them to the database. If the inserted coin doesn't match the saved information, they instantly get rejected. The systems set in place for the latest vendors are accurate. Thanks to new technology, automat owners can have less worries regarding counterfeits.

How do machines detect fake money? ›

First, the ATM's validator determines the dimensions of the banknote and scans it in different spectrums: visible, magnetic, IR, UV. It allows to verify all major signs of authenticity. With the help of magnetic sensors, the validator checks the presence and correct location of magnetic ink.

Is there an app to identify fake coins? ›

The identification process is relatively straightforward. All that is required is to take a picture of your coin (or upload a picture from your phone gallery), and the CoinSnap application will match the image to the information present in the extensive database to give a reference result.

How do you scan coins? ›

For most uses best results will be when the light appears to come from the top of the coin. On some scanners this means placing the coin upside down on the scanner glass and using the image manipulation software to rotate the scan so the top of the coin is up.

How are fake coins detected? ›

NGC uses X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, an extensive research catalog and other tools to determine a coin's authenticity. If deemed not genuine, the coin is not encapsulated. NGC offers numerous educational resources to help collectors and dealers avoid counterfeit or altered coins.

How do coin dispensers work? ›

It dispenses a single coin when a lever is depressed. Another type is a fixed coin dispenser that dispenses several coins at once, such as four quarters or five nickels, for making change at a venue for coin-operated devices, such as a penny arcade, pinball parlour, or Automat.

How does a vending machine test a coin? ›

Most machines use physical properties to recognize and check coins. Vending machines mostly look at the size, shape, and ridges of coins instead of studying what they are made from.

How does a coin counting machine work? ›

All coins in each currency have their own unique diameter and thickness. And just like a human can tell them apart without looking, mixed coin counters use automated sensors and rotating discs to identify coins based on their size, and then funnel them into separate receiving cups.

How do you get cash from a coin machine? ›

Turn your coins into cash fast.
  1. At the kiosk, pick the cash option. A 12.5% service fee + $0.59 transaction fee applies. ...
  2. Remove dirt, debris, and other objects from coins. Add coins to the tray. ...
  3. When the kiosk is done counting, you'll receive a cash voucher. Get cash for your voucher at the checkout or customer service.

How do coin machines read bills? ›

These machines have tiny sensors or small cameras that take pictures of the bill you put in. Then they check those pictures for specific patterns that help them know what kind of bill it is. Of course, it's possible to print a picture of a bill that looks real.

What do coin collectors look for in a coin? ›

The Sheldon coin grading scale is used to determine a coin's value, based on factors such as how well the coin was made, how much wear it's developed, and the luster. A coin is assigned a number between 1 and 70, as well as an adjective such as poor, good, very fine, or mint state.
