1971 S SILVER Eisenhower Dollar Value

The 1971 Eisenhower Dollar is worth a wide range of prices, from $1 for a beat-up circulated example, to potentially $10,000 to $20,000 for virtually flawless examples in the Superb Gem grade of MS67. Finer examples have yet to be certified.

Some of the 1971 silver dollars struck at San Francisco had their mint marks re-punched. Look closely at the “S” that appears above the date to spot a second “S”. (You'll definitely need a loupe or microscope for this.) A coin with this error, graded MS67 by the PCGS, sold at auction for over $8,000.

The regular strikes produced for circulation of the 1971 Ike Dollar were made of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. However, the U.S. Mint also released Uncirculated and Proof versions of the same design in 40% silver. These were the first "silver" Dollars since 1935, when the Peace Dollar was discontinued.

Values can vary significantly for this coin, which celebrates both the moon landing and one of America's most celebrated presidents. To determine Eisenhower dollar values, take a look at your coin's year, mint mark, rarity, errors, and condition.

Some varieties of the 1971 Eisenhower dollar were produced in smaller quantities, making them rarer and often more valuable. For example, the silver uncirculated coins had a lower mintage compared to the circulation strike coins.

You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar. If, however, you find a copper stripe, it is probable that your Ike dollar is the cupronickel clad version for regular circulation.

More expensive coins at higher grades are 1971-1974 Type 1; 1972 Type 2; and 1976 Type 1. In addition, most MS67 and finer copper-nickel clad dollars–and MS69 silver-copper clad dollars–are very expensive.

The Kennedy half dollar coin from pre-1975 is worth between $10 and $1,500+, depending on condition and rarity. The key aspect of the coin that causes the difference in worth is whether the print of Kennedy has "accented hair" above his ear or not.

Anthony dollars contain silver, according to a blog on the U.S. Coins Guide website. Instead, all were made from copper-nickel clad compositions. Discoloration around added “S” mintmark on an 1893-S Morgan Dollar is an indication that the “S” was added. Genuine Diagnostics: The “rabbit ears” in left foot of “R” in LIBERTY and the die scratch in top of the “T” in LIBERTY are seen on all but the lowest grade authentic pieces.

In About Uncirculated, it garners $25 to $30. Uncirculated examples in PCGS holders take anywhere from $40 to $60 in MS63 or MS64, a grade representing the bulk of Ike Dollars on the market.
