$10 Face - 90% US Silver Quarters (Random Design) (2024)

90% US Silver Quarters refer to United States Mint 25-cent pieces made before the Coinage Act of 1965 that brought to a halt any kind of silver alloy in the making of U.S. coins.

Nowadays, quarters are done using a clad metal composition (copper plus nickel), but these pre-1965 Silver Quarters are still considered legal tender, retaining their 25 cent face value. However, their real value comes from their precious metal content of 90% Silver (intrinsic value).

The term junk silver is, sometimes, mistakenly used to describe pre-1965 silver coins due to their wearing over time.

Nevertheless, we guarantee all our Silver Quarters are in average circulated condition and make for a great investment for those wanting to increase their silver holdings while sensibly diversifying their portfolio with these pieces of American coinage history.

What Coins are Included

This roll of 90% Silver Quarters Random Design can include Barber Quarters (minted from 1892 to 1916), Standing Liberty Quarters (minted from 1916 to 1930) and Washington Quarters (minted from 1932 to 1964) in circulated condition from a range of mint years (dates will vary according to our available stocks).

Barber Quarters

Barber Quarters are named after their designer, Charles E. Barber who was Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint from 1879 to 1917. They replaced the Seated Liberty design. At the time, the same design was used for the Dime and the Half Dollar pieces, making it one of the most emblematic designs in U.S. history.

The obverse features a classic rendition of Lady Liberty’s profile facing right and wearing a crown of olive branches (also called a pileus). There are 13 six-pointed stars on both sides of the Goddess’ head, representing the 13 original colonies (6 on the left and 7 on the right). Above the head is the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST and below it, the mint year.

On the other side of the coin, we can see the infamous Heraldic Eagle based on the Great Seal of the United States. There are also 13 stars above the eagle, but this time they only have five points. We can read the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM on a banner held by the eagle’s beak.

Standing Liberty Quarters

In 1916 this design created by American sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil replaced the Barber Quarters. It shows the goddess Liberty crossing a gate, looking to her left (the viewer’s right) and holding a shield in the same direction. On Her right hand she holds an olive branch. The idea is that She is shielding America against the raging war in Europe (World War 1), while at the same time wishing for peace. The walls on both Her sides are inscribed with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and thirteen 5-pointed stars.

The reverse depicts an eagle in flight. The same representation of thirteen 5-pointed stars on both sides. Above the Eagle are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Below the majestic creature it says QUARTER DOLLAR.

Washington Quarters

The Washington Quarter is the present 25-cent piece design since 1932 and was created by sculptor John Flanagan in order to celebrate the bicentennial birthday of America’s first president, George Washington.

The obverse portrays a rendition of the Founding Father’s bust facing our left with the word LIBERTY above, the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the left and the mint year below.

The reverse shows an eagle resting on a large branch with its wings open. Above it are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Below it is written the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR.

How much Silver do the 90% US Silver Quarters have

Each pre-1965 silver quarter contains .1788 troy ounces of pure silver, thus, each of these rolls have 40 pieces of 90% US Silver Quarters, which, in total, will be 7.15 troy ounces of 0.900 fine silver content and $10 face value.

90% Silver Quarters Prices

Because 90% Silver Quarters are mostly sold for their precious metal content alone, they are offered at very low premiums over the spot price of silver.

Some of these coins were in circulation during both World Wars and carry part of American history. They are all marked by one of the United States Mint branches which ensures their high quality minting, making them a very liquid investment, much like the other silver coins we offer.

Pre-1965 silver quarters are a must-have asset in both a diversified investment portfolio and coin collection. Make sure to order them from us here at SD Bullion.
